Headlines are often an overlooked detail becasue they don’t take up a lot of space, but headlines are the SINGLE most important element to get your target audience clicking on and reading at least the first two sentences of your article.
Prioritize effort on headlines
There are two kinds of headlines we are interested in
- The one on the page or post – as long as you want, within reason
- The one that is shown in search engine results – google will only show 80 characters, so make the first 80 count.
If your headline is killer and less than 80 characters, do nothing.
If the best part of your headline is not in the first 80 characters, either shorten it or use the SEO title to shorten what is shown in the search engines.
